How to choose the right glove size?

How to choose the right glove size?

Selecting the correct glove size is key to comfort and safety at work. Incorrectly fitted gloves can hinder blood circulation, limit manual dexterity, or fail to provide adequate protection. Read this guide to learn how to measure your hands for gloves correctly and check out a sample glove size chart.

How to measure your hand for gloves? - step by step

Selecting the glove size by yourself may seem challenging, but it actually only takes a few minutes and a measuring tape or ruler to avoid mistakes during shopping. Before you start, it's worth knowing that manufacturers usually list dimensions in their size charts in centimeters (cm). However, for foreign brands, especially those outside Europe, you may encounter measurements in inches (inch). Therefore, always ensure which unit is used before comparing the measurement results with the size chart, and if necessary, convert them to centimeters (1 inch = 2.54 cm).

You will most commonly need to measure three key parameters to select the appropriate glove size:

  • hand circumference (measured at the widest part, excluding the thumb),
  • hand width,
  • middle finger length.

Below we have prepared a step-by-step guide on how to perform these measurements. However, remember that this is only an example – manufacturers usually provide their own instructions, for example, on product cards of a given model, where they precisely describe how to correctly measure your hands to select the appropriate glove size.

Measuring hand circumference

Wrap a measuring tape around the widest part of your hand, omitting the thumb. Do not squeeze the tape too tightly; it should fit freely. Read the result and record in centimeters.

Measuring hand width

Lay your hand flat on a hard, even surface, such as a table. Place a ruler across the widest part of your hand, at the knuckles (just below the fingers). Measure the distance from the outer edge of the hand on the pinky finger side to the outer edge of the hand on the index finger side.

Measuring middle finger length

Measure the length of the middle finger with a ruler. Start the measurement at the base of the finger at the hand (bend) to its tip.

After taking these measurements, check the size chart for the selected glove model and choose the right size based on the measured dimensions.

Practical tips

If your measurement falls between two sizes, in most cases it's better to choose the smaller one. Perform the measurement on the dominant hand (right hand for right-handed people, left hand for left-handed people), as it is usually slightly larger.

Sample glove size chart

Now that you have your hand measurements, you can review the following glove size chart. Our store offers a wide range of gloves from the Mechanix Wear brand, and the chart below presents the dimensions of these models. Remember to always check the chart carefully before choosing gloves from other brands, as there can be significant differences.

Size Finger Length Hand Width
Men Women Men Women
XXX-Small 10.0 cm – 10.8 cm < 5 cm
XX-Small 10.8 cm – 11.5 cm 5.0 cm – 5.8 cm
X-Small 11.5 cm – 12.3 cm 5.8 cm – 6.5 cm
Small 12.3 cm – 13.0 cm 10.0 cm – 10.5 cm 6.5 cm – 7.5 cm 5.5 cm – 6.5 cm
Medium 13.0 cm – 13.8 cm 10.5 cm – 11.0 cm 7.5 cm – 8.5 cm 6.5 cm – 7.5 cm
Large 13.8 cm – 14.5 cm 11.0 cm – 11.5 cm 8.5 cm – 9.8 cm 7.5 cm – 8.5 cm
X-Large 14.5 cm – 15.2 cm 9.8 cm – 11.0 cm
XX-Large 15.2 cm – 15.9 cm 11.0 cm – 12.2 cm
XXX-Large 15.9 cm – 16.5 cm 12.2 cm – 13.7 cm

As you can see above, it's not complicated. For example, if your hand has a width of 7.6 cm and a finger length of 13 cm, then your glove size is Medium, or M.

  • X-Small (XS) – small size,
