This humble whistle seems a children's toy at first sight, but it's SOLAS approved for a good reason. It's sturdy, and produces a lot of noise with little effort. It takes nearly no place in your pocket but can be of great value in case of an emergency. In my opinion a good whistle is one of the essentials when hiking. Warmly recommended.

Today it helped me in a difficult situation by warding off an aggressive horse. I always have it attached to my backpack near the protractor. You shouldn't worry about comments that someone is a 'gadget lover'.

In my opinion, the whistle is great and every hiking and adventure enthusiast should have it in their kit. We are planning to practise signal codes with a group soon.
