This humble whistle seems a children's toy at first sight, but it's SOLAS approved for a good reason. It's sturdy, and produces a lot of noise with little effort. It takes nearly no place in your pocket but can be of great value in case of an emergency. In my opinion a good whistle is one of the essentials when hiking. Warmly recommended.

Today it helped me in a difficult situation by scaring off an aggressive horse. I always have it clipped to my backpack next to the protractor. You shouldn't worry about comments that someone is a "gadget freak."

In my opinion, the whistle is great and it's worth it for every fan of walks and adventures to have it in their equipment. We plan to soon practice agreed signals with a group.
