Origin and Beginnings of the Company
The Steiner-Optik company was founded in 1947 by Karl Steiner in Bayreuth, Germany. Initially, it operated as a small workshop, which developed into a factory employing 50 people within six years. The company's first product was the "Steinette" camera, but by 1955 Steiner had focused exclusively on the production of binoculars.
Development and Innovations
Since its inception, Steiner has focused on quality and innovation. In the 1960s, the company began producing military binoculars for the Bundeswehr, and a breakthrough moment was the introduction of binoculars resistant to extreme usage conditions. In 1973, Steiner was the first in the world to apply nitrogen tube filling technology in their binoculars, which prevented fogging and mold formation inside the optics. This innovation was later adopted by many other optical equipment manufacturers. In 1989, Steiner won a prestigious contract to supply 72,000 binoculars for the U.S. Army, making it the world's largest manufacturer of military binoculars. Currently, the company employs about 150 people, and its products are available in over 80 countries.
