Maskpol City MAPA Backpack 18 l

Practical, lightweight city backpack with a capacity of 18 litres, in MAPA camouflage. It is perfect for one-day field activities and tourist-survival activities. The Cordura 770 material ensures resistance to tearing and abrasion.

Made from Cordura 770

The City model is made using Cordura 770, which is characterised by high resistance to tears, abrasions, and adverse weather conditions.

main compartment with zip, laptop or tablet pocket

The backpack has a spacious main compartment, accessible via a two-way zip. Inside, there is a pocket for a laptop or tablet, secured with a Velcro strap. A mesh material pocket with a zip is located on the inner side of the flap. There are two open side pockets for water bottles or canteens. An elastic cord with a stopper is mounted at the front, allowing for the attachment of external equipment.

comfortable carrying system

The carrying system consists of adjustable shoulder straps with soft padding, quick-release buckles, and a sternum strap to prevent the backpack from slipping and tilting. The back part with a soft panel supports optimal air circulation. A transport handle is located at the top, making it easier to carry and lift the backpack.

Velcro Panel

On the front of the backpack, there is a Velcro panel (Velcro) for attaching any patches and emblems, like a national flag, unit emblem, or so-called Morale Patches.

MAPA Camouflage

The MAPA camouflage pattern was designed by Maciej Dojlitko, a graduate and currently a researcher at the Faculty of Architecture and Design of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, the author of, among other publications, Theory of Deconstruction of Visual Communication. Tools for designing military camouflage (Gdańsk 2015). The innovative design, supported by convincing theoretical and experimental arguments, including computer analysis of thousands of photographs of the terrain, attracted the attention of specialists and military clothing manufacturers. In 2017, the MAPA camouflage made its debut at the International Defense Industry Exhibition in Kielce as a camouflage pattern for the Dromader system of accouterment and uniforms by Maskpol, which is part of the Polish Armaments Group. The system was created for soldiers of the Territorial Defense Army, but the MAPA camouflage itself was also considered as a perspective pattern for the entire Polish Armed Forces, where it could replace the wz.93 camouflage. Unfortunately, the MAPA camouflage has not been implemented to date as an official camouflage pattern of the Polish Army.

The main features of MAPA camouflage in the basic forest variant

  • 6 colors forming layers resembling levels on a map
  • colors optimized for operations in the forests of Central Europe
  • use of the illusion of three-dimensionality and anamorphosis effect
  • biomorphic shapes making the design similar to vegetation
  • strongly contrasting elements imitating flashes of light and shadows
  • deformation of the masked silhouette using macro pattern
  • color noise reproduced by means of a micro pattern

The MAPA pattern is an interesting alternative to the best contemporary camouflage patterns such as PenCott, MultiCam, Kryptek, Flecktarn or Finnish M/05. In some respects it is more advanced than them, and also better reproduces the colors found in Central European forests in the period from later spring to early autumn.

This is a simple backpack for daily use. Personally, I miss front pockets where you could quickly stow away keys or other small items—without them, you have to open the whole main compartment every time. The price could also be a bit lower. I rate the quality of craftsmanship very highly, but, in terms of functionality, the backpack is average.

My opinion is rather mixed. The advantages are high-quality material and solid plastic elements. There is an additional compartment at the back for a camelbak. In the main compartment, there is also a functional laptop pocket. The backpack has an organiser that wasn’t mentioned in the description—unfortunately, it is taken directly from the Sparrow 20 model, which makes it neither very comfortable nor useful, as things easily fall out of it. It also seems that the organiser is made of poor polyester material. The unusual buckles on the straps make adjusting them very difficult—the straps are hard to move. The side pockets for bottles are made of mesh, which is a shame, as Cordura would have been a better choice. Overall, it resembles solid Wisport backpacks—top-class materials and good finishing, but at the same time, you can feel some simplifications and less practical details. I expected a more innovative design.

The backpack looks very good and is carefully made. The material seems solid and durable. In reality, the product differs a bit from the photos—the side yellow stripes are actually green. The shoulder straps seem a little too wide and are a bit awkward to adjust, but it’s not something that bothers me much. The back pocket has an unusual access point—it opens from the side, which sometimes makes it hard to find things inside. I think that the Nadkoli brand should promote its products better because they are really worth recommending, and I only found out about most of their practical features during use or from online reviews.
