It is an essential piece of equipment. There's no need to look for a sheltered spot or protect the fire with a backpack or jacket. The shield reduces gas consumption and stabilises the flame. Even if the wind is not noticeable higher up, near the ground it can affect burning – the shield eliminates this problem.
