What kind of backpack for a one-day mountain trip?

What kind of backpack for a one-day mountain trip?

A backpack for a one-day trip to the mountains should primarily have appropriate capacity, a well-fitted and comfortable carrying system, a sufficient number of pockets for storing items, and practical accessories that enhance the comfort of use. Not sure which backpack to choose for your one-day trip? Read our guide, which will take you step by step through the selection process and present recommended models.

Backpack for a one-day trip — what to consider?

If you're planning a one-day trip to the mountains, when choosing a backpack, pay attention primarily to:

  • the capacity of the backpack,
  • the material of the backpack,
  • the carrying system,
  • the number and arrangement of pockets,
  • other useful accessories.

We will describe each of these features in detail below to help you choose the right backpack for a successful trip.

Backpack capacity

A backpack for day trips to the mountains doesn't need to have very large capacity. In summer, a 15–20-liter model is usually sufficient. In such a backpack, you can fit provisions, such as freeze-dried food, as well as a water bottle, water filter, flashlight, and spare clothing. In winter, it may be necessary to purchase a larger backpack (30-35 liters) because smaller models may not accommodate winter clothing and additional equipment.

Backpack material

It's worth paying attention to the material from which the backpack is made and choosing a durable and sturdy model that can handle the load. Cheap, market backpacks are often made of low-quality fabrics that can tear under weight.

We recommend backpacks made of nylon and polyester because they are lightweight, durable, and abrasion-resistant. Backpacks made of Cordura are also very durable, but it's quite a heavy material, so this should be considered. It's also important for the backpack to be moisture-resistant; for example, some models have an internal PVC coating.

Carrying system

In the case of smaller backpacks intended for one-day trips to the mountains, the carrying system does not play as big a role as in expedition models, but it's still worth paying attention to. Even with relatively light loads, a poorly fitted backpack can cause discomfort, chafing, or shoulder pain after a full day of walking. When choosing a backpack, pay attention to:

  • Straps – they should be properly shaped, adjustable, and equipped with soft padding to prevent dugging into your shoulders.
  • Hip belt – it's good if it's adjustable, and even though it may be narrow in smaller backpacks, it can still help stabilize the load and relieve the shoulders.
  • Chest strap – an additional element that improves stability during faster walking or on more challenging terrain.
  • Back panel – it's worth having at least a slight stiffness and basic ventilation to reduce sweating on warm days.

Number and arrangement of pockets

When looking for a backpack for a one-day trip to the mountains, pay attention to the number and arrangement of its pockets. It's worth the backpack being equipped with:

  • Main compartment – should accommodate spare clothing, provisions, and larger accessories.
  • Smaller compartment – it's good if it features, for example, a flat pocket and two sewn-on mesh pockets that help organize smaller items.
  • Front pockets – useful for storing glasses, phone, documents, or keys.
  • Rear pocket for a hydration bladder – with a closure, for instance, using a hook-and-loop fastener, designed for carrying a hydration system.

Useful accessories

When choosing a backpack for a one-day trip to the mountains, it's also worth checking if it comes with additional elements:

  • Straps compatible with the MOLLE/PALS system – allow for convenient attachment of additional equipment, such as a small first aid kit.
  • Rain cover – ideally integrated and stored in a special lower pocket. Protects the contents of the backpack during sudden weather changes, which are common in the mountains.
  • Pockets on the hip belt – small zipped pockets, perfect for small items you reach for without taking off the backpack: phone, snacks, tissues, compass, or high-energy snacks.
