The hat is perfect for wearing under a helmet. If you use it on its own, it protects against the wind and works well on cold days (probably not for severe frost), although in my opinion it wasn't intended for this purpose. When my wife saw me in it for the first time, she said I looked like I was wearing a swimming cap.
