Baofeng UV-17E 5W is a portable handheld radio transceiver with a maximum power output of 5 W. The design is equipped with a DMTF keypad, dual LCD display, torch and FM radio. Inside is a 7.4 V lithium-ion rechargeable battery with a capacity of 1800 mAh, charged via a USB-C port.
Dual-channel monitoring, Kenwood K1 connector
A standout feature of the radio transceiver is Dual Watch, meaning dual-channel monitoring. The function allows monitoring of two different frequencies - priority is given to the frequency on which an incoming call appears. The housing features a Kenwood K1 type connector, which allows you to connect headphones with a microphone (included), a compatible speaker microphone, or shooting hearing protectors to the Baofeng.
99 channels, range up to 10 km, IP54 protection rating
There are 99 channels available, which reduces the risk of conversation interference from other radio users. In favourable conditions, in open terrain, the range reaches up to 10 km. Communication is supported by an automatic squelch system and an end-of-transmission tone. The radio transceiver meets the IP54 standard - it provides full protection against dust ingress and against splashing and light rain falling from any direction.

The radio transceiver can be programmed from the keypad or from a computer using a USB cable. In addition, the software includes many functions that make grouping and identification easier. The VOX function allows voice-activated transmission without the need to press the PTT button.

I've had positive experiences with the Baofeng company for a long time now. Reviews of this model mentioned that the radio is quite large – and indeed, it is much bigger than the UV 5R, but it sits well in the hand. For me, a huge advantage is the possibility to charge the battery via a USB-C port. The flashlight isn't anything special, but it does the job.

The Baofeng is solidly built, the torch is very bright, there are many options in the menu, the clip holds firmly, and the display looks good – I have nothing to complain about, everything is great, I can confidently recommend it. The only slight downside is the size – it's a bit bulky, but apart from that everything is fine.
