The company was founded in 1938 in Portland, Oregon, by German immigrants Marie and Paul Lamfrom. Initially, it operated as a small hat manufacturing company, named after the nearby Columbia River. Soon after, their daughter Gertrude Boyle joined the business, playing a key role in the brand's development.
Development and expansion
In the 1960s, Columbia began producing outdoor clothing, and in 1960 it officially adopted the name Columbia Sportswear. A pivotal moment in the company's history was the crisis of the 1970s, following the sudden death of Neal Boyle, Gert's husband, when she took over management of the company with her son Tim. Thanks to their determination and innovative approach, Columbia not only survived but also dynamically developed.
In subsequent decades, the brand expanded its offerings and captured international markets. In 1998, Columbia went public, enabling further growth, including the acquisition of other well-known outdoor brands such as Sorel, Mountain Hardwear, Pacific Trail, Montrail, and Prana.
