Originally, the category of trekking pants belonged mainly to the mountain segment, it was in this segment that the need for pants focused on comfort and convenience during long mountain treks was first recognized (after the military). Over the years, the pants have undergone various metamorphoses, mainly due to the implementation of new technical solutions, namely materials. The main differences that separate everyday pants from trekking pants are the material used in production and the cut of the pants. It can even be said that, in a way, they have become similar to sweatpants in terms of comfort of use and wear. They are slightly more fitted to the wearer, the material provides a certain amount of stretch, which in turn prevents chafing on long walks. Additional solutions such as a gusset in the crotch provide greater resistance to tearing. In classic pants without such a gusset, it happened that too much stride ended up with torn pants at the seam connection. A gusset made of lighter stretch material also prevents groin abrasions. Stretch inserts are also used in the waistband, in the back of the pants, giving you a sense of an even better fit between the pants and your hips as you walk. From the knees down the legs, more stretchy materials are also used, so that when lifting your legs higher, such as when climbing a rocky protrusion, the material of the pants near the knees does not block our movements (there is no need for the classic pulling up of the legs before climbing a higher threshold).

By changing the cut of the trekking pants, they have also been redesigned in terms of carrying small accessories in the pockets. The two standard hip pockets on the front of the pants mostly have reinforced edges (you don't have to worry about destroying them from knife clips or flashlights), the back pockets have been placed slightly at an angle, making them easier to use, again other manufacturers have dispensed with them altogether in favor of a layer of extra material that strengthens this vulnerable region. Side pockets, if used, tend to be much smaller than in the case of classic 'combat' pants. This is a weave technique that affects the strengthening of the fabric, thanks to the placement of special fibers at fixed distances. These are stronger fibers that, when placed on the trouser material, give the impression of a convex lattice. Thanks to these fibers, the material of the trekking pants is more resistant to damage, and if a tear occurs, the lattice formed from the fibers will not allow it to enlarge.

On the inner sides and at the back of the ankles, manufacturers also often use stronger materials, designed to protect the legs from damage (e.g.: rubbing the ankle of the other ankle). It's also worth mentioning that many models are coated with a hydrophobic coating, which ensures that the pants won't get wet in lighter rain or splashes. This coating makes the water run down the material without being absorbed into it. This is a very important advantage in men's and women's trekking pants.
