Kel-Met KM4000 leg cuffs
Chain leg cuffs serve as protective gear predominantly utilized by law enforcement agencies like the Police and Border Guard, as well as during interventions that require effective immobilization. These cuffs enable the secure restraint of an individual's legs, minimizing the chance of escape and aiding in control during transport or escort. They incorporate wide ankle openings, aligning with the specifications provided by Polish uniformed services.
Stainless steel construction
Crafted entirely from stainless steel in accordance with PN-EN 10088-1. This material is non-toxic, mechanically durable, and does not provoke allergic reactions. Lack of galvanic coatings like nickel or zinc ensures adherence to EU Directive 76/769/EEC-94/27/EEC regarding items that come into contact with the skin and aligns with forthcoming national regulations.
Construction and operating mechanism
The set includes two ankle cuffs linked by a 45 cm chainmail-style chain, attached to the cuffs through rotating joints. The cuffs are designed to minimize the potential for abrasions and injuries when used correctly.
Crafted from steel, the cuffs feature a double-locking mechanism and a movable ratchet arm. Each cuff contains a ratchet lock that can be adjusted to prevent over-tightening. An anti-accidental opening system is activated via a pin on the key. Engaging the pin locks the cuffs, while turning the key releases them.
Strength requirements
The handcuffs are built to endure the application of static force:
- Breaking force of 1500 N – exerted in the plane of one cuff while the opposite cuff remains fixed. Once the force is ceased, the cuffs maintain complete operability.
- Bending force of 500 N – exerted perpendicular to the cuff's plane on the side opposite the attachment point, without sustaining any permanent deformation.
Standards and certifications
Kel-Met handcuffs adhere to the following standards:
- PN-EN 10088-1 – a standard that outlines the chemical and mechanical characteristics of stainless steel.
- 76/769/EEC-94/27/EEC – an EU directive that restricts the use of heavy metals in products in contact with skin; features without nickel or zinc coatings.
- KGP Standard – aligns with the specifications set by the Polish Police Headquarters concerning design, operational functionality, and safety.
