Initially, the company produced waterproof clothing from cotton canvas soaked in linseed oil, providing its users with exceptional protection against moisture and cold.

In its first year of operation, Helly Hansen sold two thousand pieces of clothing, and the innovative approach to material impregnation was internationally recognized – in 1878, the brand received an award for innovation at the World Expo in Paris.
