It was founded in 1863 by Julius Edelmann and Carl Ridder. The company's name was created by combining the first letters of their last names. Initially, the company focused on the production of ropes and braided products. Julius Edelmann was a climbing enthusiast and businessman, while Carl Ridder was an engineer specializing in rope braiding machines.
Development and Innovations
For decades, Edelrid has set trends in the climbing industry. In 1953, the company developed the world's first rope with a core and sheath (the so-called kernmantel rope), which revolutionized the safety and comfort of climbers. In the following years, the brand introduced the first synthetic rope and a dynamic rope that could withstand multiple falls—solutions that became the standard in the climbing world. In the 1970s, Edelrid also developed a sitting harness, which permanently changed the approach to belaying.
