The brand was founded in 1996 by Kevin Plank, a former captain of the university football team at the University of Maryland. The inspiration to create the company was his own need – Plank was tired of sweaty cotton shirts during training, so he developed the first moisture-wicking t-shirt, which became the prototype for modern sportswear.

Genesis of the name

The name "Under Armour" came about by accident. Initially, Plank wanted to name the company something else, but after several unsuccessful registration attempts, he liked the name suggested by his brother, jokingly.
