Other features of the shoe will be important in the hot summer, and others will be useful during the harsh winter. Shoes for winter should guarantee you thermal comfort, even at extremely low temperatures, hence the importance of a warm lining, preferably with a permeable membrane, such as Gore-tex, to ensure good moisture wicking. High-top footwear will stiffen your ankle when walking on slippery ground and protect your foot from getting snow inside. The sole should have non-slip properties, preferably with a molded tread, to march steadily on winter's frozen terrain, which is useful especially when hiking in the mountains.
Temperatures are usually higher in autumn and spring, but the unpredictability of the weather is most noticeable during this time. Numerous rains, large temperature amplitudes, snow in the higher parts of the mountains - all this must be taken into account. If you want to be completely waterproof while gardening or fishing, lightweight and versatile wellingtons, which can be used year-round, will work well in this case. Shoes of this type guarantee good thermal protection and, most importantly, protect your feet from getting wet even during heavy rains. Trekking boots for the spring and autumn period should be made of water-resistant materials - leather, or synthetic fabrics - to keep the wearer's feet dry and thermally comfortable. During this period, you can also bet on lighter breathable materials, finished with suede, and choose lower models of shoes.
In summer, you will especially appreciate footwear that is light and breathable. Breathability will be improved by ventilation in the form of mesh, which allows the exchange of air inside the shoe, which is extremely important during all-day marches. An interesting alternative for summer to full trekking shoes will be sandals, designed for both urban conditions and off-road hiking. Additional protection and stiffening of some plastic models will protect feet, such as the tips of the toes from accidental injury.
